The Story of Rooibos
Rooibos has grown exclusively in the Cederberg Region of South Africa, located in the Western Cape Province, for thousands of years. Subjected to temperatures below zero in winter and above 40°C in the summer, it’s a particularly hardy plant – known botanically as Aspalathus linearis. It’s a member of the Fabaceae (Legume) family, and has long been used to create Redbush Tea.
The indigenous Khoisan people, in particular, have applied Benefits of Rooibos Tea to their daily lives for centuries. However, the plant became all but forgotten for a time following the European colonisation of South Africa during the late 1700s. As British and Dutch settlers encroached on Khoisan land, their culture and way of life faded into obscurity – and with it, Rooibos Tea.
It wasn’t until a Swedish botanist named Carl Thunberg rediscovered the plant that it came to light once more. Ultimately, this brought about a revived and, indeed, a more widespread interest in the drink. Hundreds of years later, during the Second World War (1939-1945), Rooibos Tea became a popular alternative to so-called ‘regular’ Tea. Yet the most important moment in its history was yet to come.
