What is Rooibos?
Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) grows exclusively in the Cederberg region of South Africa, located in the Western Cape province.
Conditions in the area change dramatically, with summers experiencing temperatures above 40°C and winter temperatures dipping below freezing. This, unsurprisingly, makes Rooibos a remarkably hardy and versatile plant!
The herb goes by many names, including Redbush Tea, Bush Tea and Red Tea. Contrary to popular belief, Honeybush Tea (another type of South African Herbal Tea we stock) is a different Tea to Rooibos, despite sharing some similarities.
The most notable similarity is that both Rooibos and Honeybush share a closely-knit history with the country’s indigenous population.
Dr. Annique Theron and Rooibos Tea
No one had a more remarkable influence on Rooibos’ story than Dr Annique Theron (1929-2016). In April 1967, her 14-month-old daughter, Lorinda, was suffering from colic brought about from allergies.
Dr Theron, out of desperation, decided to try adding Rooibos Tea to her breath milk to aid her sleep-deprived child. It proved to be immensely successful.
The following year, she published a book on Rooibos Tea Benefits entitled, “Allergies: An Amazing Discovery”. That discovery, you might be pleased to know, still holds credit today.
It is one of many medicinal qualities attributed to the Tea. (You can find out about the others in our health benefits section below). The question now begs: Do Rooibos Tea Bags contain plastic?
These are Plastic Free Rooibos Tea Bags
Our Rooibos Tea Bags don’t stop at improving your life in small yet significant ways. They also support the welfare of our planet due to the fact that we avoid Plastic Tea Bags microplastics.
According to the latest evidence, petrochemical products such as these have already caused considerable damage to the environment. The ocean, in particular, has suffered greatly – hence why we’re trying to make a difference.
Using a combination of wood pulp and vegetable starch, we have created Plastic Free Rooibos Tea Bags. Although technically considered “bioplastic,” these are far better for mother nature than their harmful microplastic-filled counterparts.
They’re regarded as biodegradable Tea Bags, too, thus meaning you can recycle them safely. It’s a win on all fronts – as, hopefully, you’re about to realise for yourself!

Rooibos Tea Bags for Acne
Are you looking to combat a bad acne breakout? The answer is to use Rooibos Tea Bags for skin. Alpha hydroxy acid and zinc, both constituents of which exist in Rooibos, have anti-inflammatory properties capable of reducing acne.
This is according to a 2009 animal-based study involving rats receiving the herb. It established that it could decrease levels of inflammation, as well as reduce DNA damage.
Rooibos Tea Bags for Allergies
Why did Annique’s daughter feel better after drinking this infusion? Experts believe it’s something to do with the bioflavonoid, quercetin.
Quercetin reportedly has antihistamine properties, which block histamine release from mast cells to curb common symptoms of seasonal allergies. Drinking a cup of Rooibos Tea, as a result, can lessen and, in some cases, even eradicate hay fever symptoms.
