A wonderful blend of Kenya and Assam Tea, these little pockets of joy were the creation of Mr Richard Smith, owner of The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company, upon his return from India in the 1970’s. Initially, Mr Smith had operated from his then-new home in Pluckley, the most haunted village in England and the inspiration for the name of this tea.

How Pluckley Tea was Created

With the help of his mother, Mrs Janet Smith, as well as a few others, Richard hand-packed Tea Bags from chests of ten thousand into packages ready to be sold. His first customer was a local shop in the village; a shop we today still cater for.

Over time, Pluckley Tea became our flagship beverage. Since 1982, The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company has operated from the nearby business estate of Pivington Mill, maintaining its Pluckley roots.

So, why blend Kenya and Assam Tea? Believe it or not, these two brews have a lot in common, only separated by age and geography. Assam Leaf Tea (and Indian Tea as a whole for that matter) was discovered in 1823.

Kenya Tea, meanwhile, began in 1903. Assam is a region in India while Kenya is a country in East Africa with more than 4,000 miles in between. Yet both teas come from the Camellia sinensis var assamica plant, a unique variety of the tea plant.

Both teas are also notably malty in flavour and offer a full-bodied profile. Statistically, Kenya and India are the 3rd and 4th largest exporters of tea respectively. In 2016, Kenya accounted for 10.4% of global tea exports at $680.6 Million USD, while India accounted for 10.1% at $661.7 Million USD.
