What is Pai Mu Tan Tea and its History
Pai Mu Tan is a celebrated variety of white tea, which sits in the same family as the highly esteemed Silver Needle Tea. This tea is named after the delicate and graceful white peony flower due to its light, floral characteristics. The leaves are collected from the tea bush called Camellia sinensis.
The tea itself is characterised by its unique production process; unlike other teas, the leaves are not rolled or broken, but instead are allowed to naturally wither and dry in the sun.
The history of Pai Mu Tan tea is deeply rooted in Chinese tea culture. While white tea is believed to have been in production since the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), it was during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912 AD), that the first mention of Bai Mu Dan appeared in tea literature.
In the early days, it was a tea typically reserved for royalty due to its exquisite quality and limited production. Today, Pai Mu Tan continues to be celebrated worldwide for its delicate flavour and noted health benefits, solidifying its place in the pantheon of great teas.
How to Make Pai Mu Tan Tea
Brewing this tea is straightforward, and the end result is always worth it. To prepare your tea, start by heating water to a temperature of 80°C (176°F). This will ensure all the delicate flavours are brought out fully in the cup.
Once you’ve heated the water to the right temperature, use 1 rounded teaspoon of tea leaves per cup of Pai Mu Tan, or 2 teaspoons if you want a stronger flavour. Then, steep the tea for 3 to 4 minutes before straining it into a teacup.
