What are the Origins of Oolong Tea?
No one seems to agree on how Oolong Leaf Tea came into existence. However, there are a few theories. One of the more interesting tales suggests that it originates from Anxi County in the Fujian province of China.
The story begins with a farmer confronted by a deadly snake while tending to his Tea crop. Making a hasty retreat from the serpent, he dropped his basket of harvested leaves on the floor.
When the farmer returned the following day, he found that the leaves in his basket had begun to oxidise, creating a Tea type never before seen at the time. Intrigued, the farmer brewed the Tea and tried it.
The result was unexpected – yet unmistakably delicious. The infusion went on to be named after the snake that led to its creation: Wu Long, meaning “Black Dragon”. In time, Wu Long became Oolong.
