Nilgiri Tea History
Nilgiri Tea from the Nilgiri hills of South India isn’t perhaps as well known as Assam or Darjeeling Tea. Nevertheless, it still boasts a fascinating history. The word “Nilgiri” comes from the Sanskrit language and means “blue hill”. This name refers to the blueness of the hillside when once every seven to twelve years, Kurinji flowers blossom and carpet the landscape with vibrant colour.
These hills, sometimes classified as mountains, stretch through the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The estates located here produce some 130 million kilos of Tea per annum. They have existed since the 1830s. The famous Indian monsoon rains arrive in the district during mid-summer, bringing floods and destruction but also life to the Tea gardens.
Unlike many Tea-growing regions, workers often harvest Tea during the winter months. These Teas have become known as “Frost Teas”. Nilgiri traditionally manufactures CTC (“cut, tear, curl”) Tea. With the increased demand, however, the region has started producing large leaf orthodox and organic Teas, also. The finished product is, put simply, exquisite.
