Mocha Coffee is a medium-roasted Coffee from Ethiopia, East Africa. It is not to be confused with a caffè mocha (also called mochaccino), which is a chocolate-flavoured variety.
This particular type is a Single Origin Coffee offering a distinct smoothness with strong, gamey notes. Many use it to make Espresso. Regardless of how you take it, we guarantee you’ll love its character and charm.
We make Mocha Coffee by first using the state-of-the-art Neuhaus Neotec fluidised air-bed system, which primarily uses convection heat transference to roast coffee beans.
Once it is of the perfect consistency, we then pack it fresh to order here at our Pluckley-based factory. Why not buy it and try it from The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company today? You won’t regret it.
What is Mocha Coffee?
There are two answers to the question, “What is Mocha Coffee?” The one that most people will be familiar with is the mochaccino, which has become increasingly popular in recent years.
The other one, which is arguably more important here, is a type of African Coffee – indeed one of the best-known and most loved varieties around. This is the Mocha that you’re about to choose.
Why is Coffee Called Mocha?
It’ll perhaps come as no surprise to discover that Ethiopian Mocha Coffee predates its chocolatey counterpart. The name derives from the port of Mocha (Al Mokha) in nearby Yemen, which was once where the beans were shipped from.
The distinct chocolatey note in this Ethiopian Coffee ultimately lent itself to the mochaccino, too. So in a sense, they’re all related.
The Story Behind Ethiopia Mocha Coffee
The origins of Coffee as a whole began in Ethiopia around 1,000 years ago. Unlike Tea – which was allegedly discovered by an ancient Chinese Emperor – Coffee came about not because of man, but a goat!
According to folklore, a herder named Kaldi one day witnessed his animals grazing on an unknown plant. The goats appeared elated and excitable – prompting the shepherd to find out why.
Kaldi stuffed his pockets with the plant’s berries and returned home to his wife who, in turn, advised him to speak with the local religious leaders. The holy men, however, believed it to be the work of demons.
They discarded the beans into a fire, which then roasted them and thus created a delightful aroma. Kaldi retrieved the Coffee, crushed it to extinguish the embers, and placed it in hot water.
That night, everyone who had witnessed the spectacle decided to try the infusion. The result was, of course, exquisite. Some would argue that it was, indeed, Kaldi who made the discovery.
Others – with us included – prefer crediting it to the first animals to experience its delicious taste. You can decide for yourself – all the while enjoying our Mocha Coffee!
How to Make Mocha Coffee
There is one more option should you choose this beverage: making a mochaccino using these beans. While it might seem like a complicated process at your local Coffee shop, it doesn’t have to be.
All you have to do to make a homemade Mocha Coffee is, quite literally, to blend the ingredients. Simply brew the Coffee, one option is cafetiere coffee, prepare with milk and sugar, and mix them together. What a delight!
