About Jasmine Tea
Historians theorise that Jasmine Tea came into existence during the Chinese Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE). It wasn’t until the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), however, that its popularity soared. This was a period in China’s history for all things floral. It’s no real surprise, then, that Jasmine Tea took the nation by storm. Since then, production methods have changed very little.
Workers hand-pick jasmine buds in the early afternoon of the summer months. These workers only choose buds expected to bloom that same evening, which requires a high level of expertise. Following this, the jasmine buds are stored away until the night. At this stage, the buds begin to unfurl while releasing their extraordinarily mesmerising scent.
The next stage of the process involves placing the jasmine flowers into basket trays. The workers in the factory then layer over Tea leaves for ‘scenting’. After some hours, the Tea leaves absorb the fragrance and distinct flavour of jasmine. Some high-grade Teas, including Jasmine Yin Hao, require a repeat of this process to ensure the effectiveness of the scenting.
