Our most popular Espresso Coffee is Espresso Kentish Roast, which is a blend fine-tuned by us over the course of the last 30 years, and now, it is better than ever. Made up of medium-roasted Ethiopian Mocha Coffees and Indian Mysore Coffees, as well as other Asian Robustas, our Espresso Kentish Roast is unique in a multitude of ways.
First, each Coffee is roasted separately before blending to retain the individual characteristics of each type of bean, which is uncommon in the Coffee-blending world. The results from this unique roasting and blending method produce a unique taste of unparalleled quality, one best described as complex yet indulgent.
All of our Coffees, including our Espresso Kentish Roast Coffee, are roasted using the latest state-of-the-art Neuhaus Neotec fluidised air-bed system, which primarily uses convection heat transfer to roast the beans. It is a method that ensures both quality and consistency, as well as being the most reliable roasting method to date. We have roasted Coffee for three decades, our Espresso Kentish Roast being one of our most magnificent creations.
So, what’s the story of Espresso Kentish Roast Coffee? Let’s begin with the Ethiopian Coffee beans used in its blending. Ethiopia today is best known for growing Coffees in the Sidamo and Yirgacheffe regions. The country is the top Arabica bean exporter in Africa, and around 12 million Ethiopians make their living from Coffee growing and manufacturing.
Most of these workers grow Coffee at an elevation between 1,500 m and 2,200 m, often harvesting between November and February. However, perhaps it is more important to note that Ethiopia is the home of Coffee, for it was there that the discovery of Coffee took place some 1,000 years ago.
According to legend, an Abyssinian goat herder witnessed his animals grazing on an unknown plant one day; their energy levels miraculously boosted as they pranced excitedly around their pasture. Fascinated, Kaldi decided to eat the berries found on the plant himself, and soon he felt the same sense of elation. Without realising it at the time, Kaldi, a humble man with a humble lifestyle, had just discovered a beverage that continues to be a favourite of millions, if not billions of people around the world today. Kaldi had just discovered Coffee.
Coffee reached India through the Middle-East around the 16th Century CE; however, it only emerged as a trade asset during the mid-1990’s. Before then, and in many ways still today, Indian Teas from the state of Assam and district of Darjeeling were more commonplace on the market over Coffee. Yet, times are changing.
When the Indian government ceded tight control of the Coffee industry some 20 years ago, it opened up a world of possibility whereby farmers and producers contributed to a tremendous boost in regards to both quality and sales of Indian-grown Coffee. The change in India’s Coffee industry is, to many, emblematic of the nation’s own emergence as an economic powerhouse. Today, India’s Coffee Industry is a force to be reckoned with, its greatest asset, in turn, being Coffee from the Mysore region.
