Baffled by Tea terminology? Ever wondered about its meaning and significance? Allow us to help. “FOP” stands for Flowery Orange Pekoe. This refers to the top bud and the first two leaves of each new shoot of Tea. FOP Teas contain young, tender leaves with a balanced amount of ‘Top’ or ‘Bud’.
English Breakfast Tea Origins
Did you know that English Breakfast Tea FOP likely owes its origins to Scotland, not England? Apparently, during a visit to Balmoral, Queen Victoria met Robert Drysdale, a Scottish Tea Master who had recently created a new blend. Mr. Drysdale had already dubbed it “Scottish Breakfast Tea”; however, the Queen persuaded him to change it to “English Breakfast Tea”.
Whether there is any truth to this tale remains a topic of significant debate. Yet another theory also exists – this one originating from America! Rather than a Scotsman ‘inventing’ Breakfast Tea, it was, according to the story, made by a New Yorker named Richard Davies in 1843.
The chances are we’ll never know for sure. We’re just glad that it happened!
