What is Dictamo of Crete?
Dictamo of Crete (Origanum dictamnus) is a tender perennial capable of growing 10-20 centimetres in height. It has many branches with ovate, grey-green leaves – the latter component of which we use in the making of this Tea.
Its flowers, meanwhile, are pale-pink to purple and bloom in the summer months; they’re particularly popular among bees. Humans, too, have found an appreciation for Dictamo of Crete.
The herb has, historically, been considered as an aphrodisiac. Indeed, it was once only the most ardent of young lovers who risked scrambling up treacherous mountainsides to collect it.
Hippocrates, the famous Greek physician of antiquity, prescribed the plant to people with stomach aches and other digestive complaints. The philosopher Aristotle, on the other hand, believed it could heal arrow wounds.
Dictamo of Crete in Popular Fiction
Dictamo of Crete and its healing properties even featured in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Hermione Granger, in the last book, The Deathly Hallows, tried to help a wounded Ron Weasley using it.
Although Dictamo of Crete will unlikely provide support to ailing witches and wizards, modern science indicates that it does, in fact, have health benefits. Best of all, however, is the fact that it tastes great.
