About Darjeeling Soom Tea Estate
Soom Tea Estate is located in the Darjeeling region of India and was established over 120 years ago. The tea estate spans 237 planted hectares and produces some of the finest Darjeeling Tea in the world. The first flush of springtime tea from this region is highly prized for its delicate, light flavour.
The garden was originally planted in 1860 by J. Jerdin, but over time it changed hands several times until 2001 when The Chamong Group took control at Soong Tea Garden- now known as “Soom”.
Soom tea garden is a place of serenity, located 18 kilometres outside Darjeeling. The gardens are bordered on all sides by North Tukvar Tea Estate in the north Phoobsering teas estate to its east and south Singtam Garden.
Life Around the Tea Garden
The residents of Soom Tea Garden are from many different ethnicities, with the most numerous being Nepalis and Tibetan Buddhists. According to statistics from 2011 Census in India 1 out of every 6 people living here is either Nepali or Tibetan Buddhist while there’s also a significant population who belong both culturally and spiritually within these groups as well!
The Chamong Group is a well-established tea garden and its employees have been working in this field for decades. The company provides 500 houses to accommodate the need of workers, and their family members who come from far away places like Assam or Meghalaya.
The local schools in Soom are all primary. There’s one English-medium school, which is located two kilometres away from the community centre and has been around for over 50 years!
