Darjeeling Marybong FTGFOP1 (meaning “Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe”) comes from the Marybong Tea estate of the Darjeeling District, West Bengal, India. The estate was established in 1876 by Louis Mandelli, the name deriving from the Lepcha language, a local dialect, meaning “Mary’s place”.
Originally, Marybong was known as Kyel tea estate but was renamed following a merger with a neighbouring tea estate. Marybong is located near the town of Ghoom with the Tumsong and Lingia tea estates to the west, Liza Hill tea estate to the north, and Risheehat tea estate to the east. 285 hectares of its land is used for tea production with our Darjeeling Marybong FTGFOP1 considered the best of the best.

Why is Darjeeling Tea called the “Champagne of teas”? The answer is simple: it tastes great! Tea was first discovered in India in 1823 which, compared with the history of tea as a whole, is not that long ago! Just over 40 years later, the region of Darjeeling consisted of 39 tea plantations spread over 1,000 acres, producing approximately 133,000 lbs of tea a year. But things haven’t always been easy for the district.
Dating back to the 1980’s, movements led by a large proportion of indigenous Nepali Gorkhas and followers of the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) have often staged violent demonstrations demanding the establishment of a separate ‘Gorkhaland’ in West Bengal. Between 1986 and 1988 alone, an estimated 1,200 lives were lost amidst the fierce clashes. Sparks were ignited again in 2017 but as of present, the situation has been calmed.
Despite political turmoil, Darjeeling today boasts 87 tea gardens employing some 55,000 permanent workers and 120,000 during the harvesting season. The Marybong estate is one of many such estates leading the way while maintaining the good name of Darjeeling Tea. Be part of something special with Darjeeling Marybong FTGFOP1.
