Masala Chai Indian Spicy Tea – All You Need to Know
The term “Masala Chai,” translated from Hindi, means “Spiced Tea” (मसालेदार चाय). In many respects, then, calling it “Chai Tea” is a misnomer because it’s simply repeating its name.
The phrase has nevertheless stuck. The history of the beverage itself, meanwhile, arguably dates back thousands of years to when it consisted of herbs and spices without even having any Tea leaves.
During this period, the people of India brewed up Ayurvedic infusions (a part of an ancient holistic healing practice) known as “Kadhas.” It wasn’t until a Scotsman named Robert Bruce discovered Assam Tea in 1823 that the potential for a modern-day Chai came about.
Even then, though, it took a while before blending Tea leaves with other local ingredients became popular.
Chai as we know it today only really arrived during the First World War (1914-1918). This was when the British Raj controversially introduced “Tea breaks” for Indian factory workers in the hope that it might boost the economy.
The competitive business of selling Tea soon saw vendors attempting to stand out from the crowd. They subsequently added herbs and spices used in Kadhas to cater to Indian tastes.
Now, Chai has left behind its colonial origins to become a brew for the masses. Our Chai Indian Spicy Tea is one of the finest examples – as, hopefully, you’re about to find out!
