This Ceylon Orange Pekoe 1 grade Tea comes from the Dyraaba Tea Estate in Uva province, Sri Lanka. The region lies at an altitude between 4,000 and 5,900 feet above sea level, which makes for excellent Tea-growing conditions. This particular Tea is a prime example of what the area can offer in terms of quality and consistency.
Ceylon Uva Dyraaba Orange Pekoe 1 is an orthodox Tea traditionally manufactured for the Russian Tea Market. Nowadays, however, Tea Connoisseurs everywhere choose it for its full-bodied profile and floral undertones.
“Orange Pekoe 1” refers to a grade of Tea that contains leaves larger than FOP (Flowery Orange Pekoe). Workers at the Dyraaba Estate harvest the Tea when the buds have opened into leaves. They seldom contain “tip”.
The Dyraaba Tea Estate
The Stratheden Tea Syndicate established the Dyraaba Tea Estate in 1914. Since then, it has had a succession of owners and managers, each with their own vision that later shaped the estate. Today, Dyraaba produces quality Black Ceylon Teas enjoyed around the world.
Brief History of Ceylon Tea
The potential for a Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka) Tea Industry came not from the valleys of Uva, or Kandy, or Nuwara Eliya, but from the highlands of Scotland! This was the birthplace of James Taylor, who later saved Ceylon from economic collapse.
In 1869, the island of Ceylon produced only Coffee. However, that year a disease called Coffee Rust ravaged the crop, throwing the country’s economy into disarray. Experiments conducted by Scotsman James Taylor proved to be a saving grace. Years before, he had planted 19 acres of Tea at his Loolecondera Estate in the Kandy region. In 1872, Taylor established a fully-equipped Tea factory. That same year, he made his first sale of Ceylon Tea.
Without the work of James Taylor, we might not have Ceylon Tea as we know it today. Without him, we might not have our Ceylon Uva Dyraaba Orange Pekoe 1 Tea! The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company are, indeed, proud to stock this exceptional brew.
