A Brief History of Camomile Flower Tea
Camomile Flower Tea can come from two botanical varieties: German Camomile (Matricaria recutita) and Roman Camomile (Chamaemelum nobile). Both belong to the Asteraceae (daisy) family. The former is a hardy, self-seeding annual plant with a hollow, bright-gold cone around the bloom that has numerous white rays. The latter is a hardy, low-growing perennial best known for its sweet, apple-like scent.
They have a close association with the ancient Egyptian God called Ra. Additionally, people of the period used Camomile Flower Tea in cosmetics and hair products, as well as in ceremonies and rituals. Greek physician Dioscorides (c. 40 CE – c. 90 CE) believed that it could heal liver and nervous system disorders. Roman Pliny the Elder (23 CE – 79 CE) thought it could tread headaches and inflammation.
Several centuries later, the Anglo-Saxons recognised Camomile as one of the Nine Sacred Herbs alongside the likes of Nettle Leaf Tea, Fennel Tea and Thyme Tea. Little has changed today other than modern science now backing these age-old claims with concrete evidence.
But there is an important question that we haven’t yet addressed: Does Camomile Flower Tea have caffeine?
Does Camomile Flower Tea Have Caffeine?
Caffeine is a stimulating chemical compound that, in reality, needs little introduction. It functions by blocking adenosine, a neurotransmitter that relaxes the brain while making you feel less tired. This then has the opposite effect: It makes you feel more energised and less sleepy. However, since Camomile Flower Tea is a Herbal Tea, it is 100% void of caffeine and, therefore, is a good Tea before bed.
