Assam Behora Estate Tea TGFOP is an Indian Black Tea with a close association with our company. Owner Mr Richard Smith’s grandfather, Mr Robert Stammers, worked there from the 1920s.
This infusion, as a result, honours his and the entire family’s legacy, which is why we’re proud to stock Behora Assam Tea. When brewed, it produces a deep, malty flavour well-suited to traditionalists.
If you need an extra boost first thing in the morning, meanwhile, then you’ll be pleased to know it has around 45-mg of caffeine per 8-oz cup.
What’s more, according to the latest scientific research, it has the potential to enhance brain function, improve heart health, promote weight loss and even reduce diabetes risks. Perhaps best of all is the fact that we pack it fresh to order, ensuring quality and consistency.
Our Company and the Behora Tea Estate
In 1927, Robert Stammers, then aged 23, happened upon an advertisement by the Rajmai Tea Company of Assam. The organisation was seeking a plantation assistant with engineering experience, which would turn out to be an opportunity that changed his life forever.
Boarding the 7,000-ton vessel, SS Nankin, in February 1928, Robert began his long journey to the Behora Tea Estate in Assam, India.
Behora had been established 20 years earlier, in 1908. Initially, Mr Stammers’ responsibilities lay solely within its factory walls.
He oversaw the daily work of some 100 labourers. This was out of an estimated 1,300-strong workforce stretched out across the rest of the Behora Tea Estate. In 1929, his fiancee, Madeline, sailed out to join him. The couple married soon after.
Life at the Behora Tea Estate
During their time there, Robert and Madeline experienced much. The birth of their child, Janet. Wild elephants disrupting estate pipelines to get water.
The Japanese being only 28 miles away from their location during the Second World War. Problems with leopards prowling around the gardens. Even an earthquake occurred, causing much damage to the surrounding area.
Yet their life at Behora, overall, was a happy one. Robert went on to become the manager, while Janet, when she was older, married Malcolm Smith. Their son and our owner, Richard Smith, then arrived on the scene.
The family eventually returned to the UK to establish The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company. By choosing this Assam Tea, then, you’re opting for history in a cup!
What Significance is the Tea Grade?
Now to discuss Assam Tea Behora TGFOP itself. The “TGFOP” in its name stands for “Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe,” a Tea grade of many noteworthy qualities. The “TG” in it, in particular, represents Tea with the highest tippy content. “FOP,” meanwhile, denotes Tea made from the top bud and the first two leaves of each new shoot. In other words, it is nothing but the best.
