The Selimbong Tea Estate and Region
This renowned Organic Tea garden is situated within the Mirk Valley at altitudes of 1,400 metres above sea level. It boasts about 160 hectares of Tea-growing land. Like all other Tea estates in the Darjeeling district, the First Flush period – signifying the first harvest of the year – takes place in March. The colour of the leaf might be confusing, but it is a type of Loose Leaf Black Tea.
The region has produced tea since the 19th century, when a Scotsman named Robert Fortune smuggled saplings from China and introduced them to Darjeeling. Today, the industry covers an estimated 17,500 hectares and employs over 52,000 people, 60% of whom are women.
Despite its allure, a mere 1% of India’s total Tea output comes from Darjeeling. Selimbong First Flush Tea is all the rarer!
