The name ‘Rooibos’ originates from the Afrikaans language and translates into ‘Red Bush’, which refers to a unique scrub only grown in the Cederberg region of South Africa. The scientific name for this shrub is ‘Aspalathus Linearis’, meaning Rooibos isn’t technically a tea at all! In fact, Rooibos Tea is actually an herb that has been nurtured by the tea industry for almost 250 years.
The story begins long before Europeans set foot on the continent, however, with Rooibos originally used by the Khoisans; the indigenous population found in the Cederberg region. These tribespeople used Rooibos for herbal remedies until colonisation threatened their way of life and their numbers began to dwindle.
By 1772, it seemed the use of Rooibos had all but faded from existence until a botanist by the name of Carl Humberg rediscovered the leaves, prompting a revived and more widespread interest in the tea-like beverage.
Since then, Rooibos tea’s popularity has been growing steadily with the demand for this blend increasing by more than fifty percent in recent years.
