Ingredients in Chamomile and Rose Petal Tea
Chamomile is a member of the Asteraceae/Compositae (daisy) family, within which there are two popular varieties: German Camomile (Chamomilla recutita) and Roman Camomile (Chamaemelum nobile).
Both types grow freely in pastures, cornfields, on roadsides and around other sunny, well-drained areas. They are particularly popular components in cosmetics, aromatherapy and, of course, Chamomile Herbal Tea.
Its name derives from the Greek word for “ground apple” or “earth apple,” alluding to its enchanting aroma. Historically, the ancient Egyptians used it during rituals and ceremonies to Ra, their Sun God.
It was also a flower grown by the Greeks and Romans. In Anglo-Saxon culture, centuries later, Chamomile became one of the Nine Sacred Herbs (others included Fennel and Nettle).
Rose Petals, meanwhile, come from the perennial flowering plant of the same name, which belongs to the Rosaceae family. It famously boasts a stem protected by sharp prickles – a stark contrast to its beautiful, captivating flowers.
The petals from these flowers can vary in shape and colour depending on the species. Once harvested, they, too, find their way into numerous commercial products and infusions.
In Egypt, Cleopatra (69-30 BCE) once used them as an aphrodisiac. During visits from her lover, Mark Antony, she would reportedly instruct her servants to cover the floor in Rose Petals.
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), millennia later, commanded his officers to apply them to gunshot wounds during battle. Nowadays, we blend them to make our Chamomile and Rose Petal Tea.
